Microsoft and OpenAI share a special partnership with the creator of Windows after making an investment of about $ 10 billion in the latter. The exclusive partnership allowed OpenAI to work with some of Microsoft’s nemesis companies like Salesforce and DuckDuckGo.
However, a new report published by the Wall Street Journal said that there may be tension between the two companies. It claims that OpenAI warned Microsoft about the dangers of using an unreleased version of GPT-4 to power its Bing Chatbot.
Notably, Microsoft said during the launch of Bing Chat that its chatbot is powered by a proprietary language called Prometheus. However, in March, Microsoft officially confirmed that its AI chatbot actually works with the OpenAI GPT-4 language model.
The WSJ report said some Microsoft employees were also worried about using the OpenAI language model arguing that it could steal Bing’s thunder. While other employees believed that Bing could learn from the way the public used ChatGPT.
However, Microsoft has pushed ahead with the launch of Bing Chat despite warnings from OpenAI that the chatbot had a number of issues that led the Seattle-based company to eventually limit the number of conversations users can have with it. can have its own chatbot.
“Microsoft continued to release the Bing chatbot. The warning turned out to be correct. Users were experiencing wrong answers and things about interacting with the tool,” the WSJ reported.
Although OpenAI and Microsoft appeared united to defeat Google in the AI-based chatbot competition, the report shows that cracks may finally begin to appear in the profiles of the two companies.
In addition, given that OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing Chat serve the same audience more or less, it is bound to create problems between the two companies. The WSJ report says “Microsoft has effectively limited OpenAI’s search engine clients.”
“Microsoft and OpenAI sales teams sometimes make the same customers,” the report added.
