An upcoming update to Google Maps will bring transparent directions as a live activity

For iPhone users, the biggest addition is that the popular navigation app comes to the lock screen as a live notification.

With clear directions, you can see information like ETA and where to turn next on the lock screen without having to unlock your phone. If you choose a new route to your final destination, the trip is automatically updated.

The feature will be available “in the coming months.”

Another new feature rolling out today is the immersive view. It combines Street View and aerial imagery to create a model of the location. In addition, it also contains other information such as weather, traffic and occupancy of the place.

You can now see Immersive View in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo.

Google explains better how the feature works:

Let’s say you’re planning a visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. You can virtually hover over a building and see where things like entrances are. You can use the time slider to see what the area looks like at different times of the day and what the weather will be like. You can also see where the crowds are so you have all the information you need to decide where and when to go. If you’re hungry, hit the streets and explore nearby restaurants—and even peek inside to get a quick feel for the vibe of the place before booking your reservation.

It will launch in additional cities in the coming months, including Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice.

Live View Search options let you search for things around you like at an ATM. Just bring your phone to life and see important information. It is now available in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo, and will eventually expand to Barcelona, Dublin and Madrid.

A similar Live View option indoors uses arrows to help point you in the right direction in a place like an airport. The feature is expanding to more than 1,000 new locations worldwide, including airports, train stations and shopping malls.

Google Maps is a free download for iPhone and all iPad models.
